Memorias de Abajo, Memorias de adentro: A talk by Rafael Manrique

In response to the exhibition The symptomatic surreal: Leonora Carrington, Rafael Manrique explores the relationship between the human psyche and art, following Leonora Carrington’s journey through Santander.

As Carrington reflected on herself after recovering further from her treatment, she explained that all her experiences, from the most painful to the most joyful, had changed her. This later helped her bring together her life experiences with her emotional and imaginative world. Her life and artistic journey raises questions about healing that resonate movingly today. It invites us to consider how illness, exile, solidarity and isolation ultimately speak to life as a deeply interconnected experience.

Rafael Manrique is a psychiatrist and holds a doctorate in medicine. He has received research fellowships from Spain’s Social Security Health Research Fund and the University of Massachusetts at Berkshire Medical Center. He has directed training courses for public and private institutions in Spain and Latin America; served as an adviser to the University of Cantabria’s Aula de Letras and as a cultural adviser to the Port Authority of Santander. He is a columnist for El Diario Montañés and the author of several books, including La psicoterapia como conversación crítica, Sexo, erotismo y amor, Conyugal y extraconjugal and Nuevas geografías amorosas. He co-authored La mente infinita with Begoña Cacho. He currently works in private practice as a psychiatrist and psychotherapist in Santander.
