Through a landscape of words we could create a hammer that strikes the chest the way falling in love does, build an anthem that works as a romantic act, one that speaks of the rise, the glow, the eroticism and the combustion, but also of apathy, dilemma, heartbreak and the overwhelming of bodies surrendered to loving and being loved.
Here, words can cast a spell. Performing feels like being exposed, with no escape, the place where those of us who show our feelings end up. Showing emotions leaves us vulnerable. I lift my arms and open my hands, but there is still a hidden side. This anthem travels through texts from earlier works like El Ardor, One Night at the Golden Bar, Analphabet, and El corazón de Ester. I take the words out of their stage setting, because they never really needed it. I look for the audience member nearby. I tie these words together and realize that after all these years, I am still in the same place: the emptiness in my chest
Alberto Cortés (Málaga, 1983) is a stage director, playwright, and performer who explores his own journey. He started working in theatre in 2009, taking an unconventional approach to dramaturgy that has become more daring over time. Along the way, he has met other artists and friends who have inspired him, creating works in different formats and styles to keep believing in mystery, the intangible, and what makes us human. At some point, he discovered poetry and the idea of forming a romantic connection with the audience. He has presented his work at international festivals and venues like Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Festival d’Automne à Paris, and Triennale Milano, as well as many festivals and theatres across Spain. He has published Los montes son tuyos (2022), Siempre vengo de noche (2024), and Libro de las devociones (2026) with Continta Me Tienes, which collect the texts of his recent works. His writing has also appeared in French and Italian. Today, he embraces his identity as a creator, performer, director, playwright, companion, teacher, son, brother, uncle, lover, and friend.
After the performance, Alberto Cortés will be in conversation with Alejandro Alonso Díaz, responsible for Public Programmes at Faro Santander.
