Death has permission: Modern mexican art. A talk by Mónica López Velarde Estrada

 

As part of the Day of the Dead celebrations dedicated to Jacques and Natasha Gelman, Death has permission: Modern mexican art explores significant works of Mexican art and their relationship with the Day of the Dead, observed in Mexico on 1 and 2 November. This centuries-old tradition has evolved through Indigenous, colonial and modern influences. Mexican painting from 1910 to 1950 reflects its enduring, richly varied imagery.

 

Mónica López Velarde Estrada is a mexican art critic, curator and cultural manager. She holds a master’s degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Since 2022, she has been pursuing a doctorate at the University of Granada, working on her thesis Symbolism and Surrealism in Mexico. New persperctives. She is a member of the scientific committee of the university’s journal Quiroga. Revista del patrimonio iberoamericano.

 

She has curated around thirty exhibitions, including Myth, Mortals and Immortality at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC; Surrealismo. Vasos comunicantes at the National Museum of Art and Vicente Rojo: 80 años después at El Colegio Nacional. She has held senior roles at the National Museum of Art, Mexico’s National Institute of Fine Arts and El Colegio Nacional. She is currently a curator at the Museo Soumaya, Fundación Carlos Slim.
