An essential part of the Mexican Day of the Dead celebration is the home altar, a space dedicated to remembering family, friends, pets, and other loved ones who have shaped our lives. These altars invite us to cherish the bonds, feelings and experiences that have left their mark on us. They are made using everyday objects, flowers, food, candles, figures and photographs, which serve as offerings and shared memories.
In this workshop, the whole group will build a shared altar together, turning the creative process into an experience of coming together and collaborating. We’ll start by making small sculptures from a range of modelling materials, such as craft foam, Plasticine or air-dry clay, shaping symbolic gifts inspired by people, animals or special moments we want to remember. Each participant will contribute a unique piece representing a treasured memory or a gesture of thanks.
We’ll then add flowers, tablecloths, soft toys, drawings, and other everyday items to create an art installation inspired by Mexican altars, which will remain on display until 8 November. Everyone is welcome to bring along their own objects, as long as they don’t mind them being decorated and added to the altar.
By creating, talking, and working together, we’ll celebrate happy moments and see how some memories stay with us and help shape who we are.
TALLER LIMO
Taller Limo is an art and ceramics studio founded in Santander by artist Eva Gárate Basanta. Conceived as a place to meet, experiment, and learn, it promotes an open, multidisciplinary approach to art and welcomes both adults and children. Its programme combines ceramics classes, one-off workshops, shared studio space and art projects.
The project draws on the experience of Eva Gárate, a visual artist and cultural mediator with close ties to Cantabria’s art scene, and Gabi Aparicio, an artist who trained at the University of the Basque Country and the Polytechnic University of Valencia and runs art workshops for children. Together, they lead a space that sees creative work as a tool for exploration, learning and personal growth, encouraging free, participatory creative processes shaped around each person’s interests.
