SPECIAL: DAY OF THE DEAD

Del 28 de octubre al 9 de noviembre

The Art of Remembering: Day of the Dead

This autumn, Faro Santander is brimming with colour, tradition and remembrance to celebrate the Day of the Dead, one of Mexico’s most iconic traditions. From 28th October to 9th November, visitors will be able to discover this unique celebration through a programme inspired by the Gelman Santander Collection, paying tribute to those who are no longer with us and celebrating life.

The centrepiece of this special event will be an impressive Day of the Dead altar, almost six metres high and four metres wide, which will transform the archway at Faro Santander into a space brimming with the symbolism, forms and textures of Mexican culture. Designed by Cristina Faesler Bremer and Mateo Holmes from Diamantina Edición in collaboration with the Casa de México Foundation in Spain and master Mexican craftspeople, the altar is crafted using traditional techniques and materials such as papel picado, cartonería, carrizo and bamboo. An installation designed to spark curiosity and invite visitors to discover the artistic and cultural richness of a tradition that transforms remembrance into a shared celebration.

Behind this creation is Diamantina Edición, a project that explores the possibilities of art and popular culture to reinterpret traditions from a contemporary perspective. Cristina Faesler Bremer, is a Mexican cultural manager, curator and multidisciplinary artist. Throughout her career, she has led numerous projects promoting contemporary art and culture, and has held positions such as director of the Mexico City Museum. In recent years, she has carried out outstanding work as a creator and curator of altars for the dead in cultural institutions across Mexico and Spain.

The experience is rounded off with a programme of activities for all ages, inviting participants to explore the Day of the Dead from different perspectives. Art critic and curator Mónica López Velarde Estrada will give a talk entitled ‘Death Has Permission: Modern Mexican Art’, offering an opportunity to explore the connections between art and this tradition. Sociedad Cántabra de Cuidados Paliativos will host a Death Café, a space for open and respectful conversation to share reflections on death and life. In addition, younger visitors can take part in children’s workshops in Llamita, organised by Taller Limo, where they will discover the symbols, artistic expressions and traditions of the Day of the Dead through creative, participatory and festive activities.

Come along to Faro Santander and let yourself be surprised by a tradition that reminds us that honouring our loved ones is also a way of celebrating life.
