New Perspectives: Luis Mario & Lidia Gil

New Perspectives brings together people from the worlds of art and culture to broaden the ways we look at the exhibition Masterpieces from the Banco Santander Collection and its four themes: Sacred stories; portraits, characters and figures; objects: still lifes and nature morte; and places and landscapes, from a range of persperctives.

On this occasion, cantabrian writer Luis Mario approaches the collection through the damp atmospheres of Cantabria that he describes in Calabobos. He discusses the exhibition with curator and cultural manager Lidia Gil.

Luis Mario (Cantabria, 1992) has published four novels: Cadencia de estornino, Salto de Página, 2021; Beautiful piece round of the sea, Sr. Scott, 2023 and Calabobos, Reservoir Books, 2025.

He spent years working as an advertising creative for brands such as Nike, Audi and UNICEF, before leaving it all behind to travel and write what would become his first novel.

He now runs literary workshops on magical realism and works as an independent advertising creative from a small village in Catalonia, where he also leads a writing workshop with his neighbours.

Lidia Gil (Santander, 1972) is a curator and cultural manager. She holds a degree in Art History from the Complutense University of Madrid and was a member of the editorial team of Arte y Parte magazine. She has given lectures on contemporary art at Espacio C in Camargo, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Santander, and other cultural venues including Eureka, the Maritime Museum, Fundación Botín and the University of Cantabria. She works independently in art theory, criticism and curating. Her research explores the relationships between art and science and technology, the dialogue between reality and fiction, and the mystical and symbolic dimensions of art.
